Criminal ForensicsCriminal forensics has taken a turn in recent years with companies now targeting your very own pets. That is right, your best friend may be breaking the law when they do their daily duty and leave that smelly pile of poop. Municipalities are now looking to their forensic teams and outside companies to put together programs to identify the "POOPetrators". Is this where we are going? Are police officers going to pick up poop and pack it in evidence bags and take it to the crime lab? One company in Tampa Florida believes that is exactly what is going to happen. Mr Dog Poop Inc has invested heavily in the science of matching dog poop with the dogs that pooped it. Developing custom software to match DNA markers the same way that the FBI catches human criminals. Currently, they service multifamily communities throughout the continental United States and have government contracts that they hope will expand to your town soon. That means, the next time your dog poops on someone's lawn and you don't pick it up, it could be sent to a DNA lab where they extract the DNA and process it just like the TV crime shows. Can you imagine having a knock at your door by a police officer ending in your pet being taken away in hand cuffs? Well, it likely wont come to that, but similar to the red light cameras sending fines to motorists, we could see fines by mail for failing to pick up dog poop. At Mr Dog Poop they are already developing software interfaces with interoperability functionality to communicate with municipal networks and law enforcement. So they are planning for that future where dogs are placed in criminal databases just like humans. While this may seem extreme, consider that there is one dog in the USA for every 3 people, that means that 25% of the US population is canine. Without a way to manage over a quarter of the population we could be headed for an environmental crisis, disease outbreaks such as Ebola, MRSA and zoonotic diseases passing from animals to humans such as the swine flu or bird flu. So Mr Dog Poop believes that the time to manage the pet population has come and they are poised to provide the data and bio-tech infrastructure to do just that. For the individual pet owner, that means that being a responsible pet owner will be a requirement. Pet owners beware, time are changing and if you don't start picking up after your dogs, you may be forced to pay hefty fines. And don't think this wont happen, because it already is. Most municipalities place the burden of dog poop on either their code enforcement staff or animal control and those law enforcement agencies are looking for new tools to combat the dog poop problems in their cities. |
