Pooper Scooper Covid 19 Warning
Notice to all pooper scooper services, we know you are taking every precaution to prevent spreading of bacteria and viruses between yards, but during the pandemic and beyond, with the known high concentrations of Covid 19 in dog poop it is even more important to properly disinfect all tools and boots between yards. With high work volumes it is easy to get sloppy and miss a few spots on a rake or bucket. Since Mr Dog Poop started as a pooper scopper service we wanted to share our techniques for disinfecting tools and boots with other poooper scoppers. We found the most effective method was to use pressures washers powered by the pooper scooper vehicle and fed by a tank of disinfectant. It was efficient and effective and surprisingly easy to set up. Here was one of our trucks disinfecting the tools after a yard clean up.
You can make your own set up for a couple hundred dollars, yes, it is not that expensive to do it properly and safely. Use a 110 volt pressure washer and a 12 volt inverter that converts 12 volt DC to 110 volt AC, add a simple tank of water which could be a 5 gallon bucket with a lid available in any hardware store for around $5. You will need a couple pieces of hose and some fittings, but a savvy person can build this for under $200. Save money by shopping Harbor Freight and Ebay, you will find parts for less than half of a local hardware store like Home Depot. It will save you time, money and give your customers the assurances they need in these trying times. If you are still using spray bottles and paper towels, stop it. That will never really clean the tools or the bottom of your feet. If you can't swing the $200 for a professional set up, just go to Home Depot or Lowes and pick up a $10 garden sprayer. You can pump it up with air pressure and spray down the tools with generous amounts of disinfectant. For the disinfectant, we recommend Top Performance 256 which is widely available online from about $30 a gallon. It makes 256 gallons of full strength disinfectant which with last you quite a while. You can purchase it on petedge.com for $35 with free shipping if you spend over $100. One table spoon, makes 1 gallon of powerful disinfectant. If you are running a larger operation, commercial disinfectants are available in 5 gallon pails that make 5,000 gallons of disinfectant and 50 gallon drums to make 50,000 gallons of disinfectant. We used some of those products to disinfect entire lawns that were filled with old poop. You can use standard laundry chlorine bleach, which is cheaper, but it will break down the plastics, rust your tools and vehicle. However, it is very effective against covid and other viruses in dog poop. However you decide to proceed with cleaning tools, just make sure you are careful and through with the cleaning process. Making a mistake can spread contaminates from yard to yard not to mention making you seriously sick. |
